Our companies

Over the centuries, the monks of the Benedictine monastery have cultivated and developed a wide variety of crafts. Today, secular professionals pay homage to these traditions, combining them with modern trends and leading them into the future.

Our Boarding School – Stiftsschule Engelberg

Since the beginnings of the monastery, the monks have been teaching young people and, in accordance with the Benedictine tradition, encouraging them to become individuals who are capable of conflict and consensus and who are willing to learn new things throughout their lives. Living together in the boarding school strengthens the sense of community and social responsibility. From 1851, the school was greatly expanded and developed into a grammar school with a federally recognized Matura. The grammar school at Stiftsschule Engelberg prepares students for the bilingual Matura (D/E) and the International Baccalaureate (IB). The boarding school is open to boys and girls who attend the grammar school or the secondary school run by the municipality of Engelberg (IOS). Around fifty boys and girls from all over Switzerland and abroad live in the modern rooms.

Monastery joinery

For centuries, the monks of the Benedictine monastery of Engelberg have cultivated and developed the carpentry trade. Today, secular professionals are carefully continuing this tradition, combining it with modern trends and leading it into the future. We have been supporting and guiding young people in their training for years to ensure that the carpentry trade continues to live on at the highest level in all its facets.

Klosterschreinerei Engelberg offers everything you would expect from a modern woodworking company. We plan and realize carpentry work using the latest technology and thus create unique pieces of lasting value and sustainability.

Monastery plant nursery

Our own greenhouses and gardens have been the pride of the Benedictine monastery of Engelberg for generations. The cultivation and care of flowers, herbs and vegetables are tasks which our employees passionately dedicate themselves to. The nursery regularly provides the floral decorations for the monastery church and also offers its products to the public in the monastery flower store. On request, the nursery team can create colorful seasonal flower box arrangements and balcony planters, as well as attend to the planting of graves and their maintenance.

Monastery bakery

Our bread comes fresh every day from our own monastery bakery. In addition to the traditional Ruchbrot, the monastery baker has also created his own original spelt bread. Whether it’s the popular apple and nut tartlets, puff pastry croissants and almond croissants or seasonal products such as Epiphany cakes, Grittibänze or biscuits in their various forms, all our products are baked fresh every day. They can be purchased directly from the monastery bakery or in the “Chäs im Kloster” store.

Winery

The vines of the Benedictine monastery of Engelberg grow in a prime location in Wingreis/Engelberg BE (municipality of Twann). Monastery winegrower Beat Burkhardt cultivates the monastery plots ambitiously and with great attention to outstanding quality. Terroir-influenced wines are produced from grapes that are native to Lake Biel and thrive well. These include the “Chasselas Kloster Engelberg” and the “Pinot noir Reserve Kloster Engelberg”, as well as the new “Cuvée Blanc” made from Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Blanc in small quantities from summer 2025. The monastery wines can be purchased in the monastery flower store and the Chasselas and Pinot noir in the “Chäs im Kloster” store.

Tagenstal power station

The high-pressure hydroelectric power plant built and operated by Engelberg Monastery generates electricity for the monastery using two turbines. The employees of the power plant are also responsible for maintaining the electrical infrastructure of the entire monastery complex.

Cartage

Engelberg Abbey still operates its own wagon depot today. In the past, it was horsepower that transported the wagonloads, but today it is a tractor that can be used universally. Transporting woodchippings, providing transport support for the forestry operation, clearing snow and looking after the woodchipping plant are the tasks of the wagon depot today.
