Insights into the monastery operations

St. Benedict already stated in his rule that monasteries should take care of their own spiritual and physical well-being. The production of the monastery's own products has been steadily expanded in recent years and adapted to the needs of the clientele.

Monastery plant nursery

Our own greenhouses and gardens have been the pride of the Benedictine monastery of Engelberg for generations. The cultivation and care of flowers, herbs and vegetables are tasks which our employees passionately dedicate themselves to. The nursery regularly provides the floral decorations for the monastery church and also offers its products to the public in the monastery flower store. On request, the nursery team can create colorful seasonal flower box arrangements and balcony planters, as well as attend to the planting of graves and their maintenance.

Monastery bakery

Our own monastery bakery produces freshly baked bread daily. In addition to the traditional Ruchbrot (a coarse brown Swiss loaf), the monastery baker also makes an original spelt bread according to his own recipe. Whether it’s the popular apple and nut tartlets, puff pastry croissants, almond croissants or seasonal products (such as Epiphany cakes, Grittibänze, or Guetsli in their various forms), all our products are baked fresh every day. Place your order directly with the monastery bakery (pre-order by telephone) or at the “Chäs im Kloster” shop.

Wine and winery

The grapevines of the Benedictine monastery of Engelberg thrive in a prime location in Wingreis/Engelberg BE (municipality of Twann). Monastery winemaker Beat Burkhardt cultivates the monastery vineyards expertly and with great attention to outstanding quality. Terroir-influenced wines are produced from grapes that are native to Lake Biel and thrive well. These include the white «Chasselas Kloster Engelberg» and the red «Pinot noir Reserve Kloster Engelberg», as well as the new «Cuvée Blanc» made from Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Blanc grapes in very small quantities from summer 2025. These wines can be purchased in the monastery flower shop; the Chasselas and Pinot noir wines are also available in the «Chäs im Kloster» shop.

Our wines

Grape: 100% Chasselas - organic quality

The very first white wine from the monastery’s own vineyards—crafted from old vines growing in one of the finest sites in Twann, on the shores of Lake Biel. Vinified by none other than Beat Burkhardt, awarded Bernese Winemaker of the Year 2017 and named Gault&Millau Rookie of the Year 2020.
Renowned wine critic Yves Beck describes the wine as follows:
“Pale yellow in color. An elegant, floral bouquet with notes of linden and acacia blossoms. The palate opens with finesse and fruit, followed by expressive aromatic depth. The wine shows body, a gentle creaminess, and perfect balance. A beautiful, fruit-driven wine with outstanding drinkability!” Gault&Millau captures it in just a few words:
“A wonderfully mineral, fresh, and complex wine from Lake Biel.”
This characterful wine also offers excellent ageing potential, rewarding those with the patience to let it mature for a few years.

Grape: 100% Pinot noir - organic quality

Nestled in the prime vineyards of Wingreis/Engelberg BE (in the municipality of Twann), the vines of the Benedictine Monastery of Engelberg flourish in an exceptional location. With passion, dedication, and a constant focus on excellence, monastery winemaker Beat Burkhardt tends the historic vineyard parcels with great care.
The result is a collection of distinctive, terroir-driven wines crafted from grape varieties that have long thrived on the shores of Lake Biel. Among them are the elegant Chasselas Kloster Engelberg and the refined Pinot Noir Reserve Kloster Engelberg. Starting in summer 2025, a new limited-edition Cuvée Blanc—a harmonious blend of Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Blanc—will join the range.
These unique monastery wines are available at the Monastery Flower Shop, with Chasselas and Pinot Noir also offered at the “Chäs im Kloster” specialty store.

Grapes: Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc - organic quality

A cuvée crafted from three grape varieties, each vinified separately and brought together before maturation. The bouquet reveals delicate notes of elderflower from the Sauvignon Blanc, complemented by hints of ginger and rosehip from the Gewürztraminer. On the palate, the wine mirrors its aromatic profile beautifully, opening with a subtle saline touch that lends both breadth and vitality—here, the Pinot Blanc makes its presence felt.
