The chandelier in the monastery church
The historic chandelier in the middle of the nave was donated to the monastery in 1909 by Engelberg hotel pioneer Eduard Cattani (1841-1908) on the occasion of the expansion of the first electrification stage in 1899. The striking chandelier was created by the Regensburg silversmith Johann Josef Deplaz (†1925), who worked closely with the Beuron School of Art. Deplaz was the owner of an art institute that was particularly successful in the field of ecclesiastical art and produced chasubles and church utensils in gold, silver and enamel. In addition to the monastery church in Engelberg, numerous works of art from the Deplaz workshop can be found today in churches in southern Germany and Switzerland. The chandelier was removed in 1961, but was reinstalled in its original place during the church restoration from 2005 to 2010.
