Father Emmanuel Wagner (1853-1907) was the first photographer of the Benedictine monastery of Engelberg. His photographic works remained undiscovered for years. They were only “discovered” and made accessible to a wide audience as part of the “900 Years of Engelberg Abbey” anniversary celebrations. The pictorial effect is astonishing, and the secret probably lies with the subjects themselves, who sometimes appear in the picture in a slight pose, sometimes naive, sometimes professionally influenced. He created contemporary documents with his photos. A selection of his photographs can be viewed in the shop window of Amrhein Optik, Titliszentrum 6, in Engelberg until September 30, 2025.
