Foot washing

An Engelberg Lenten custom

An Engelberg Lenten custom

The Benedictine monastery of Engelberg has a very special Lenten custom. During the pontifical mass beginning at 8 p.m. on Holy Thursday, April 17, 2025, Abbot Christian Meyer and parish priest Father Patrick Ledergerber will wash the feet of the First Communion children of Engelberg. This is done in memory of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples according to John 13:34. In fact, until a few decades ago, this act of grace was only given to twelve boys. And even then, only boys with a native surname were allowed to take part. Today, all First Communion children are invited to have their feet washed. No matter whether they are girls or boys.

We invite you to celebrate this Lenten custom with us on Thursday, April 17 at 8 pm.
